Over the past quarter-century there has been a significant change in terms of the human rights and freedoms granted to members of the LGBTQ+ community. This new level of acceptance and equality has helped pave the way for today’s youth to come out at a younger age than previous generations. While this change marks a significant point in LGBTQ+ history, by no means have all members of this community been granted full acceptance with open arms.

Many individuals whose sexual and/or gender identity fall outside the norms and expectations of the greater heterosexual cisgender populous continue to face prejudice and discrimination. Many LGBTQ+ youth continue to endure hardship and intolerance from within their families of origin, their places of work and school, and from various political and religious factions who openly condemn LGBTQ+ members. The impact of this cannot be underestimated.

The OK2BU – LGBTQ+ Youth Process and Support Group provides an opportunity for youth to come together in a safe meeting place to discuss and process the impact of life experiences associated with being members of the LGBTQ+ community. Topics that may be discussed include the following:

• What it means to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community

• Identifying and working through feelings of shame and internalized homophobia and/or gender-phobia

• Navigating the fear and struggle of coming out

• What do healthy friendships and intimate relationships look like

• How to talk about safe sex

• What it means to develop a positive sense of self-worth and identity

• How did we get to where we are today – exploring LGBTQ+ history

• What community supports are available
